As an assistant and later senior assistant in the NYUAD Wood Shop, I supported the shop instructors with student, faculty, and institutional projects. After hours, I would work on my own independent pieces under the supervision of the instructor. These often end up as gifts to friends and family. Over the years I spent working there, I learned:
- to anticipate tasks by extrapolating from observed behavior and processes
- to maintain focus and composure working in a deadline-driven, high risk environment
- to anticipate problems and estimate project costs
- to train other assistants in the operation and maintenance of fabrication tools
- to teach others how to execute successful wood projects
- plywood fabrication
- exposed joinery
- woodturning
- furniture design
- box and furniture construction
- more than I could ever list here
